Please don't leave dogs alone and anxious

AT this very busy social time of year when we are urged to help people who might be lonely and in need of company, could we please also spare a thought for all the lonely pets that crave, but do not receive, the love and attention they truly deserve.

In addition to good food, fresh water, shelter and regular exercise, dogs need love and companionship but some, even old and ill dogs, spend hour after hour alone with or without adequate shelter and their cries are heart rending.

Socialising with other dogs and people stimulates a dog’s brain and is as vital as physical exercise.

The RSPCA recommends that, ideally, dogs should not be left alone for more than four hours and although it is difficult for people juggling work and family life, giving a dog daily companionship and including it as a member of the family is very necessary to its wellbeing.

Separation anxiety can cause a dog to become insecure and insecure dogs can be destructive and likely to cling to their owners when they return. Dog owners who ignore their dog’s needs should have opted for a soft toy and no responsibility instead of taking on the important responsibility of pet ownership.

People might start out as committed pet owners but when changes happen - perhaps a new partner or baby - the commitment is forgotten.

Sadly, some pets would be better cared for in a shelter than alone and neglected in solitary confinement.
