Llandudno should lead the way and shun fireworks

ARGUMENTS about the fire display make me feel sad. The expensive hoard of incendiary devices is still unlit. The children have "been deprived" of a few exciting minutes of noise and colours in the sky.

But should we not be teaching the next generation the values that we know deep down in our hearts to be true? While we waste money on such frivolities, millions of people in this country and abroad suffer great hardships through poverty. Think of your favourite charity and imagine what the price of those fireworks could do.

The major consideration of global warming shouts against the lighting of thousands of bonfires, not to mention the disturbance caused to the atmosphere by the fireworks. An essential lesson for our children to learn.

Many people could miss out on a visit to the burns unit at their local hospital with injuries that, in some cases, are life- threatening.

Finally the terror caused to untold numbers of animals, both domestic and wild, would be stopped.

Let’s make Llandudno the first enlightened town to donate our firework money and teach our children about the harm caused by the ancient custom of Guy Fawkes.
