The people of Colwyn Bay need to back their working town

I THOUGHT I would let the recent "ramblings" of Cllr Squire pass by and become tomorrow’s chip paper.

His view is on the face of it quite extreme, however there are merits in selected redevelopment not least to remove the control of housing away from certain landlords and create decent homes for the allsorts that make up our society.

What prompts me to write is the comments of one of Cllr Squire’s critics, Alan Lake. Although I agree with the main body of his letter in his summing up.

Mr Lake clearly has taken the jaded view of Colwyn Bay referring to the shabby people and the drab grey granite town centre, he managed to include the pound shops as well.

I will point out to him that Colwyn Bay is a working town and that if I walk into town down Abergele Road, I can get a picture framed, buy a sandwich, get some hinges and some cat food, buy a tropical fish.

I can pay for my papers, get some furniture restored, arrange for my car to be fixed, sort out an MOT, buy an antique, admire a wedding dress, call in at the credit union. I can get a button sewn back on, buy a washing machine, have a guitar repaired, buy some carpet, get a key cut and I haven’t reached the theatre yet.

From the other end of town I can buy flowers and admire a particularly classy ladies fashion shop, etc.

I, on my journey through my adopted home town, also meet a load of really great people, some of them waiting for taxis and buses. Colwyn Bay is a working town trying to do better and I love it.

We don't have cobblers in Colwyn Bay at the moment. Yes I did say cobblers!

But neither does Parc Llandudno.

We should really work on what we have to offer as a town.
