Athletics: Abergele runner wins Llanddoged race

THE 11th annual 12km Ras Fawr Llanddoged last Sunday was won by local man John Ford, a member of Abergele Mysteruns, who completed the course in 48.54.

Emma Collins (Denbigh Harriers) was first lady home in 59.06 and Jeni Richards (Abergele Harriers) was second female in 59.59.

The Arfon Ffrith Galed Cup was presented by Ceinwen Jones to Chris Yorke (51.47), the first member of Llandudno-based North Wales Road Runners Club to complete the course.

The team award went to Abergele Harriers.

Main results: 1 Ford 48.54, 2 Yorke 51.47, 3 Barrie Wells (N Wales Road Runners) 54.47, 4  Ashley Wager (Eryri Harriers) 55.00, 5 Arfon Owen 55.42, 6 Paul Stinton (Buckley Runners) 57.10, 7 Andy Simpson (Abergele Harriers) 57.12, 8 Mark Mayers (Abergele Harriers) 58.15, 9 Ralph Pawline 58.40, 10 Donald Williams (Eryri Harriers) 58.48.

Ladies: 1 Collins 59.06, 2 Richards 59.59, 3 Michaela Lauder 62.13,  4 Paula Lloyd Jones 62.59,  5. Jenny Wells (NWRR) 65.10.

The race is run in memory of former North Wales Road Runner Arfon Jones and two other members of that club competed – Lee Pownall clocked 66.00 and Len Jackson was just behind.

Six Abergele Harriers took part. As well as Simpson, Mayers and Richards (mentioned above), Keith Elliot was 17th in 61.16, Sian Hall was 28th in 67.31 and 36th was Sue Calvert in 72.47.

Abergele Harrier Darren Blazier, winner at Llanddoged for the last three years, was in Cardiff on Sunday representing North Wales in the Welsh 10k Championships. Blazier registered 36.01 to count in the North Wales Vets team.

Abergele Harriers results: 12th Dewi Roberts 1–14.48 (91 seconds off PB and third fastest Harrier of all-time for half-marathon); 25th Gareth Roberts 1–18.56; Lucy Jones 2–03.15; Christobelle Pownell 2–03.57 (PB); Cheryl Richards 2–07.07; Sharon Kynaston 2–07.08.

North Wales Road Runners: Kay Hatton 1–42.05; Colin Thackray 1–56.53; Cliff Wilkinson 2–37.26.

Abergele Mysteruns: Peter Barraclough 1–32; Mike Hobday 1–32.15; Alan Taylor 1–34.20; Chris Hobday (guest) 1–40.

Two Mysteruns took part in the gruelling Peris Horseshoe 17.5 mile fell face, John Humphries clocking five hours and three minutes and Peter Lester Owen 5–58 (PB).

Several members of North Wales Road Runners entered the North Wales 10k Championships in Caernarfon.

Star performer was Chris Yorke who won the male V40 category and gold in the Championships (ninth overall) in 37.48. 

Other prize winners were Barrie Wells, second M55 in 41.35, and daughter Jenny Wells was third senior lady in 47.16.  Other members: Alan Davies 47.57, Lee Pownall 48.55, Rhian Carpenter 52.04 and Erika Dawson 54.32.

The previous weekend Martin Green ran an excellent race in the Fleetwood Marathon finishing 14th overall.

Despite a strong headwind in the final 10 miles, at times reaching 25mph, he finished in three hours 14 mins.
