Motor sport: North Wales crews excel in Blackpool

TWO local rally crews put in exceptional performances in one of the North West of England’s most gruelling and challenging events at the weekend.

Rob Dick and Barry Green from Colwyn Bay overcame bad luck which has dogged them in previous attempts on the rally to take a credible third place overall in their Darrian T9 in the Legend Fires sponsored North West Stages which started and finished in Blackpool.

And brother and sister crew Chris Phillips, from Llandudno, and Sarah Hughes, from Mochdre, achieved an excellent result by winning the 1600cc class in their Peugeot 106 Gti and taking a fantastic 11th place overall.

Nienty five cars left the start on Blackpool promenade on Friday evening, but only 47 completed the 28 special stages to reach the finish back in Blackpool on Saturday evening.

Their success on the event marks a good start to the 2010 season for Chris and Sarah, who recorded some notable wins and awards last year.last year were outright winners of the Trawsfynnydd Challenge covering rounds at that rally venue, as well as Sarah taking the Association of North West Car Club’s women co-drivers award, and Chris finishing second overall in the ANWCC Stage Rally Championship which he won in 2008.
