Tennis: Old Colwyn ex-pat returns to North Wales to claim crown

LIAM SHELBOURNE is celebrating after returning to the area and lifting the North Wales Open Tennis Championship.

Shelbourne, originally of Old Colwyn, but now living in Chester and working out of Hoole Tennis Club as the professional, secured the North Wales title with a 6-2 6-1 victory over Mold rival David Openshaw in the final.

A part winner of the Welsh Junior and Doubles championship and previously a Welsh international, Shelbourne saw off Mauronikolas Petros in the first round 6-0 6-0, before beating Prestatyn’s Ian Preston 6-2 6-1 in the second round of competition.

Warrington’s Alex King was beaten 7-5 3-6 10-8 in the last eight, before Shelbourne secured his place in the final with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Peter Dodswell.
