Bowls: Llanrwst hit form against ex-champs Deganwy

LLANRWST produced one of their best performances of the season as they toppled champions Deganwy 10-4 in the North Wales Coast Bowls League’s Section A.

It was also a good day for Rhos Park A as they won their derby at Rhos Park B 10-4 to go joint top.

Overnight leaders Colwyn Bay RBL were surprise 8-6 losers at Caernarfon, while Penmaenmawr went down 9-5 at St Asaph, despite a 21-6 victory for Steve Jones.

Blaenau Ffestiniog were beaten 9-5 at Bangor City, who celebrated their first success of the season.

In Section B, Ian Hughes 21-4 helped Conwy emerge 10-4 victors at Bethesda, while Min-y-Don Park’s Graham Rogers 21-1 starred in an 11-3 rout of relegation-threatened Rhuddlan.

Section C action saw Christine Purnell’s 21-10 fail to prevent Llysfaen from falling 10-4 at home to Copperfields. Vardre pair Margaret Dickinson and Rhona Wright both won 21-9 in their 12-2 romp against Llanrwst, Terry Davies 21-6.

Invincible Benllech saw their all-conquering run come to a halt at second-placed Old Colwyn in a 8-6 fall in Section D.

Brian Birchall 21-10 saw Old Colwyn take the aggregate by five points after finishing locked on 6-6.

WELSH COUNTIES LEAGUE

Last Tuesday (June 16) lowly Rhos Park toppled Deganwy Roofing 7-3 in their derby date and climbed off the bottom.

Julian Parry and Mark Whitely were both 21-8 home winners, Darren Williams 21-8 the pick for Deganwy in a 149-124 split.

St Asaph floored leaders Esclusham 7-3 in a 144-130 aggregate, Gareth Foster 21-8 and Ian Trickett 21-9 pointing the way while Colwyn Bay RBL went the whole hog with a 10-0 wipe-out of bottom club Llanfairpwll, Craig Richardson 21-3 and Chris Slater 21-4 on top form.

VALE OF CLWYD MIDWEEK LEAGUE

Front-runners St Asaph A handed out a 12-2 caning to neighbours Trefnant A, helped by Lewis Scott 21-3 and Gareth Wilson 21-4 to keep the reigning champions out front in Division A of the Vale of Clwyd League.

Closest challengers Sunny Rhyl went one better with a 13-1 blitz of hosts Kinmel Bay A to close the gap to five points.

Paul Welbourne 21-7 and W G Edwards 21-8 steered Abergele A to a 10-4 victory over Meliden A.

In Division B, second-placed Highbury won 13-1 against Abergele B, Norma Moore 21-9 responding.

Elfed Morris 21-4 helped Llysfaen to a 9-5 win over Rhuddlan B.

CONWY Bowling Club will be holding the Mitch Pattinson Memorial Pairs Open Competition on Sunday Aug 9.10am start. Entry is £12 per pair.

Over £800 is offered in prize money, with the winners guaranteed £400.

Limited to 32 pairs, there are still a few places available.

THE quarter-finals of the Binns Cup, the County Cup for the Glyndwr Bowling Association, were held last week.

Results: St Asaph A 238 Abergele 136, Sunny Rhyl 215 Colwyn Bay RBL 193, Rhuddlan 231 Eirias Park 171, Meliden 225 St Asaph B 192.

The semi-finals, to be played on Friday, July 17, will be St Asaph A v Sunny Rhyl at Mochdre Park and Rhuddlan v Meliden at Rhos Park.

The Glyndwr Junior Inter-Area team played their third match of the season away against Wrexham last Saturday at Castell Alun BC, losing by 7pts to 3. Having been unable to field a team last season it is encouraging to be able to compete again in the WCGBA Inter-area League.

TEAMS in the Colwyn and Llandudno District Bowling League were involved in cup competitions last week.

Section C Knockout Cup semi-finals (June 17): Rhuddlan 227 Min-y-Don B 204, Llanfairfechan B 271 Old Colwyn 244. Final at Dwygyfylchi on July 6.

Section D Knockout Cup semi-finals (June 17): Dwygyfylchi B 277 Rhos Park D 257, Vardre B 293 Llandudno C 251. Final at Penrhyn New Hall on June 29.
