Golf: Penmaenmawr spring upset in Bayonet League

PENMAENMAWR battled through fierce wind and driving rain to spring a major surprise by winning 3-2 at defending champions Royal St David’s in Division One of the Bayonet Winter Scratch Golf League last Sunday.

Ashley Carr was Penmaenmawr’s star man, carding several birdies in a 5 and 4 victory over Welsh boys international Llion Lloyd Kerry.

David Williams also won 4 and 3 against county squad member Geraint Jones and Ben Brown gained a match-clinching 2 and 1 win over Joe Soar.

Ben commented: "Those were probably the worst conditions I have ever played in. We were all absolutely soaked through at the finish, but it was a fantastic win for us and Ashley was certainly the star of the show."

For Royal St David’s, Barry Williams beat David Williams 4 and 3 and Norman Fletcher had a 3 and 2 win over Clive Brown to get their two wins.

That results leaves Royal St David’s 5½ points behind league leaders Conwy A with both having played four matches - and they are due to face each other in a key match at Conwy this weekend.

Conwy’s fixture at home to Llandudno’s North Wales club last Sunday was postponed due to the weather, as was Henllys v Holyhead.
