Badminton: Abergele husband and wife clinch English title

ABERGELE husband and wife Richard and Wendy Eastwood of Rhos-on-Sea Badminton Club, played a major role in helping Cheshire become English inter-county Over-45 champions for the first time.

The veteran pairing, who last year helped Rhos-on-Sea win the Conwy County Badminton League for the first time in many years, also play in the Chester League which qualifies them for Cheshire, and were ranked as No 4 over-45 mixed pair in England last year.

They were men and lady captains of the Cheshire team, made up of four men and four women, at the inter-county championships at Hatfield where they lost 3-1 to Yorkshire, but claimed excellent wins over Lancashire (3-1), Suffolk (4-0), Surrey (3-1) and Avon and Somerset (3-1) in the round robin competition.

It all came down to the final mixed doubles in the final match against Avon which Richard and Wendy had to win to clinch the overall title from Yorkshire, and they staged a storming finish to come from 17-20 down to win 23-21 in a nail-biting finale.
