DEGANWY triathlete Rachel James-Owen has made a triumphant return to the Caribbean to win her age group in the Turtle Triathlon in Grand Cayman.
Competing in the event for the second year running, the 37-year-old accounts manager, who is a member of the Abergele-based Carneddau Triathlon club, showed the improvement she has made in the last 12 months by winning the 30-39 age category in which she finished seventh last year.
The race consists of a 750 metre open water sea swim, followed by 20km bike leg and finishing with 5km run along Grand Cayman’s famous Seven Mile beach.
"There was a bigger entry than last year and it was so windy that the swim was actually nearer 850metres because one of the marker buoys got knocked out of position by the waves that were splashing over us as we swam," said Rachel.
"I really didn’t expect to win and to have improved my time on last year by nearly six minutes in those conditions has really surprised me.
"But I’ve been training a lot harder this year and that has clearly paid off."
Rachel completed the course in 1hr 39mins 20secs to finish over a minute ahead of local girl Alexandra McMaster in second place.
