Hockey: Colwyn Bay’s chance of top three spot

COLWYN BAY could move into the top three of Division One in the North West Hockey League with two home games this weekend, after a 4-1 victory at Formby last Saturday.

They play West Derby on Saturday and Bebington on Sunday, while two of the teams above them (South Cheshire and Bowden 3s) play each other.

With none of the current top three winning last Saturday, Colwyn Bay were able to make ground with a dominant performance at Formby – despite being without a couple of first choice players.

Skipper Simon Roscoe put them in front with a fine finish, and although Formby equalised from a short corner, Colwyn Bay dominated through Mike Lloyd and Ben Williams in midfield and veteran John Beattie up front.

Matt Mahon struck twice with well-taken reverse hits and Jacob Neal fired into the roof of the net from a Graham Dicken cross to put the Bay 4-1 up at half-time.

Although Formby tried to get back in the game in the second half, the impressive Andrew Seimann in defence and Wyn Williams in goal held firm.

Colwyn Bay 2nds moved to third place in Division Five South with a 3-2 home win over Neston South Wirral.

LLANDUDNO are looking for a ruling from the league after their top of the table game at Bramhall 2nds in Division Five South was abandoned after 55 minutes due to the pitch starting to freeze.

Llandudno’s Pete Hoyland had already gone to hospital with a badly cut hand when the game was stopped – but the league are currently crediting Bramhall with a 3-2 win.

Llandudno had come from 2-0 down to level with goals from Steve Tustin and Tom Simpson, from a short corner, but Bramhall regained the lead after Llandudno were reduced to 10 men by the injury to Hoyland.

A Llandudno spokesman said: "I don’t know if Bramhall have now claimed the game, but on the pitch they agreed with the umpires that it wasn’t safe to play on and the talk was to re-play the game on January 10."

Llandudno are at home to fifth- placed Crewe Vagrants 2nds this Saturday (Ysgol John Bright, 2.30pm).

Llandudno 2nds had an excellent 4-0 win in their top of the table clash with leaders Neston South Wirral 6s in Division 10 South to move to within four points of them.
