Athletics: New records at Colwyn Games

DESPITE the awful weather, records were broken and equalled at Colwyn Bay Athletics Club’s September Games at the Eirias Park arena last Saturday.

The event attracted athletes from all over Wales, including three from the special Olympics Team at Wrexham, as well as competitors from Cheshire, Liverpool, St Helens and 42 from the Bohermeen Athletics Club in County Neath, Eire.

New Colwyn Bay member Jake Jones-Davies set new Games records in the Under-13 100 metres (13secs) and 200 metres (21-1).

Geraint Breeze from Wrexham broke the record for the boys Under-11 100 metres (14.9secs), while Maisie Blake from Ynys Mon set a new record in the Under-11 girls (15.5 secs) and also won the 600 metres.

There was also a new record in the junior men’s javelin of 57.03 metres by Andrew Allan of Liverpool Harriers.

Welsh junior sprint champion Elin Jones from Llandudno Junction equalled the Games record in the Under-13 100 metres with a time of 13.6 secs alongside Deeside’s Beth Sargent who clocked the same time, and Elin also won the 200 metres.

There were 800 and 1500 metres doubles for Lewis Myatt (Under-17s) and Harry Donegan (Under-15s), while Nathan Roberts won both the Under-15 boys high jump and long jump.

There were also Colwyn Bay AC victories for Neal Jones (senior men 800 metres), Zak Trevor (under-15 shot putt), Tony Haley (under-13 discus), Oliver Myatt (Under-13 high jump) and Nathan Thomason (Under-11 cricket ball), and top three finishes for Ben and Jack Hoult, Abi and Sam Backshall, Bethan Ward, Jack Macdonald, Dave McArdle, Jonathan Hardway, Tom Early, Seorse Bailey, Iwan Parry, Michael White, Adam Eden and Dan Cunningham.

Welsh Under-15 sprint champion Rachel Johncock was unable to compete due to injury.
