RACHEL JOHNCOCK from Dolwydellan, who is rapidly moving up the ranks of the athletics world, had her success this year recognised at the Aviva Gateshead Grand Prix last weekend.
She received a Spar Sprints award at an event that attracted two of world’s top sprinters in Asafa Powell and Usain Bolt of Jamaica.
Earlier in the week she won a bronze medal at the UK Under-15 championships in Birmingham in a very competitive field.
Having set a personal best of 24.82 at the 2008 Celtic Games recently which broke a 25-year-old Welsh record and lay down a brand new Celtic Games record, the 14-year-old member of Colwyn Bay Athletics Club is now ranked UK No 2 in her age-group for 200 metres.
“ I have had a couple of injuries but have recovered and each time have come back with a personal best where I dipped below 25 seconds which was my season’s target,” she said.
“My biggest achievement is probably winning at the Celtic Games at the same time as breaking a 25 year old Welsh record, and also coming third in the UK Under 15 National Championships in Birmingham, despite still recovering from a calf injury.”
