Golf: Strong field for Aberconwy Trophy

THIS weekend (June 28 and 29) sees the 72-hole Aberconwy Trophy hosted by Conwy and Maesdu, with crucial points at stake towards the Pinnacle Welsh Order of Merit – the top seven of which will be selected for the Wales team for the Home Internationals at Muirfield in September.

Seven of the current top 12 in the Order of Merit are in the strong line-up for the Aberconwy event, including North Wales challengers Jason Shufflebotham (Prestatyn), the defending Aberconwy champion, and Stuart Runcie (Abergele).

Entries also include Joe Vickery of Newport, who last week reached the semi-finals of the British Amateur Championship before losing to eventual winner Rainier Saxton of the Netherlands.

James Frazer of Pennard, who got to the quarter-finals at Turnberry before losing on the final green to Vickery, is also scheduled to play, having moved in to the top six of the Order of Merit

Ben Westgate of Trevose leads the merit table by over 100 points.

The first 36 holes are at Maesdu on Saturday, with a further 36 at Conwy on Sunday.
