Rugby Union: Shock big defeat for Nant Conwy

NANT CONWY suffered what must be one of their heaviest ever defeats as they crashed 53-12 at Bro Ffestiniog in a WRU Division One North fixture on Saturday.

The visitors did not have any answers to regular attacks by Bro and the surprise was the score was so close at half time.

Barry Roberts kicked his first penalty for the Quarrymen after three minutes and Daniel Roberts notched his first try soon after.
Two other penalties by Barry Roberts after 14 and 18 minutes followed before Ifan Jones caught Bro napping from a free-kick awarded just before half time.

He darted through four possible tackles to touch down beneath the posts and Peredur Ellis converted to make a half time score of 14-7 when the home team had been in total control.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Barry Roberts kicking an early three-pointer and Daniel Roberts adding another try, converted by Barry Roberts for 24-7.

Nant responded when their pack shoved the Bro eight over the line for Elgan Davies to register a push-over converted try.

From this point, the Nant heads dropped for some reason and every movement by Bro in the last 10 minutes resulted in a score.

Tries came from Lee Aspen (3), Daniel Roberts and Barry Roberts, who added two conversions for a personal tally of 23 points.

This Saturday, Nant will visit Ruthin in the North Wales Cup.

LLANDUDNO 19 BETHESDA 57
TROUBLED Llandudno lost their fourth consecutive match of the new season as nine-try Bethesda romped to victory at Maesdu Road.
Tudno’s personnel problems continued as they had to field a makeshift front five, with second rows John Bowman and Mark Jones forced to play out of position as props in order for the match to be played.
They struggled throughout the match in the set scrums, and due to this were unable to provide the backs with try-scoring opportunities.
The visitors were 33-0 up at the interval, but the second half saw the home side put up a stronger challenge and were rewarded with tries by Andy Jones, James Gregson and Dave Davies, with two conversions by Jones.
However, this did not unduly worry Bethesda who took maximum league points.
This Saturday Llandudno are at home to Caernarfon in the first round of the North Wales Cup 2.30pm.
Llandudno are holding a dinner on October 15 for their president Howie Roberts in respect of his 50-year membership of the club.
Guest speaker is former Wales and British Lions centre Steve Fenwick. Tickets are available from the clubhouse or by contacting the secretary Heather Thomas on 01492 879914 or Dave Robertson 01492 874841.
