Cricket: Skipper Smith stars for Llandudno

SKIPPER Steve Smith added yet another ton to his collection as Llandudno vaulted up to second in the North Wales Cricket League Premier Division with an eight-wicket thrashing of Bangor at The Oval.

Smith’s stunning knock of 119 was his third century of the season and put him on 814 league runs at an average of 90.44.

Tudno had five first team regulars missing due to holidays and after losing the toss were asked to field first.

The Seasiders started as usual with their opening pace attack of Gordon Kerr and Jack Rimmington, who kept the runs down against Bangor’s first pair.

However, it was Andy Christian who removed both openers, having Matthew Jackson caught behind for 10 and Qasim Ijaz brilliant taken in the slips by Kerr for 22.

Bangor batted doggedly on and with Tudno’s fielding not up to its usual standard they were able to set 202-9 off 58 overs, mainstay Nick Roberts top scoring with a good 69 not out.

For the hosts, Ajay Dhawan snapped up 3-22, Christian 2-36, Jack Rimmington 2-38 and Graham Boase 2-41.

In reply, Tudno had 52 overs to make 203 but they suffered an early blow when Aled Williams was dismissed for a duck.

Sam Rimmington then joined Smith in the middle and they went on to concoct a 165-run partnership for the second wicket, taking Llandudno to the brink of victory.

Smith was eventually caught, having been dropped five times, but Rimmington (54 no) and Kerr (14 no) guided The Oval men to 203-2 in the 38th over to wrap up a 28-0 points verdict.
