Football: Conwy United FC beat Denbigh to progress in Welsh Cup

CONWY UNITED 2 DENBIGH TOWN 1

REVENGE tasted sweet for Conwy as they reached the first round proper of the Welsh Cup by beating a Denbigh side they lost 2-1 to in the league a fortnight previously.

And their reward is a home tie against Mid-Wales League outfit Waterloo Rovers on September 11.

Both sides were missing key regulars for Saturday’s tie at Y Morfa, but served up an entertaining and competitive second qualifying round tie in which the Musselmen ended up worthy winners.

Conwy started in positive fashion and Town keeper Jamie Clayton did well to push Mike Williams’ ferocious shot from the edge of the box over the bar.

On 20 minutes, though, a Darren Evans attempted clearance struck one of his own players and rebounded to Darren Cassidy who fed Ian Evans and the Denbigh striker made no mistake from 12 yards.

Conwy, however, continued to put pressure on the visitors’ defence and brilliant work by Toby Jones on the byline led to a cross which Ben Hughes controlled and volleyed home.

On 41 minutes the Tangerines attacked down the right and the ball was fed in to Toby Jones who laid off for Williams to finish and give Conwy a 2-1 lead.

The second half was much the same as the first with both teams searching for the goal that would either win the game or put them back in it, Conwy’s returning striker Paul Cassidy firing just over, but there were no further goals.

LLANDUDNO JUNCTION 2 HOLYHEAD HOTSPUR 4

JUNCTION paid the price for a poor first half display as a Curt Williams hat-trick guided Holyhead into the next round.

Hotspur took a 13th minute lead when Williams’ persistence took him into the box before taking pass Dean Garmey’s pass which enabled him to make it 1-0.

Williams added his second after a surging run and finish and then lofted a superb ball over the defence for Mel McGinness to latch on and lash home first- time.

Junction were way off the pace, although Holyhead keeper Liam Shanahan had to make saves from Mitchell Booth and Mike Lundstram while Jack Higgins was through but his touch let him down.

The Railwaymen made a better start to the second half, Tom Patel setting up Higgins for a neat finish.

Patel then blasted over from five yards when he should have done better and Junction paid on 63 minutes when Williams was brought down in the box and netted the resulting penalty himself.

The hosts reduced the arrears in the 72nd minute when Patel was felled in the area and Higgins scored from the spot, but that was the end of the goals.

BORRAS PARK ALBION 7 GLAN CONWY 3

FAW Trophy holders Glan Conwy will make no more progress in the Welsh Cup after suffering an unexpected thrashing at Borras.

Glan trailed 6-0 before Nathan Jones and Andy Booker (2) restored some respectability to the scoreline.

MONTGOMERY TOWN 1 PENMAENMAWR PHOENIX 2

PETER WILLIAMS and Carl Rowlands provided the goals which put Phoenix into the first round proper at the expense of their Powys opponents.

Pen have been drawn at home to fallen giants Caernarfon Town on September 11.

NEFYN UNITED 2 LLANRWST UNITED 1

IT went to extra time at Cae’r Delyn before Llanrwst’s determined effort came to an end.

Nefyn had led from the 11th minute but Elliott Llewelyn levelled after 80 only for a Caron Williams penalty to decide it.
