Football: Llanrwst United FC snatch late win

NEFYN UNITED 3 LLANRWST UNITED 4

Welsh Alliance

LLANRWST United started the match brightly against Nefyn and there was only two minutes on the clock when Jamie Williams drew a good save out of Neil Perkins in the Nefyn goal.

The first half continued with Llanrwst on top and Aron Jones was next to draw a save out of the Nefyn keeper.

Nefyn then had their only effort of the half but Alan Jones’ shot was well blocked by Rhys Griffiths.

Llanrwst took the lead on 27 minutes when Jamie Turner played the ball down the line for Aron Jones who turned the Nefyn defender John Gwynfor Jones – a veteran of some 130 odd Welsh Premier games for Porthmadog. Jones then bore down on goal and ignored Lee Allen who was square and unmarked to drive the ball home past Perkins in the Nefyn goal.

Lee Allen then had the chance to double the lead but his shot whistled narrowly over the bar.

In the 42nd minute Llanrwst doubled the lead when Rhys Griffiths’ header from a Jamie Williams corner was half cleared only for Mathew Evans to drive home into the bottom corner from 20 yards out.

Nefyn started the second half in determined fashion but it was Llanrwst that thought they had stretched their lead when Aron Jones outpaced the defence and finished clinically only to have his celebrations cut short when the goal was ruled out for offside.

Nefyn were then given a penalty when the referee adjudged Paul Roberts in the Llanrwst goal had brought down Rhodri Scott and Caron Williams stepped up and fired home at he second attempt after Roberts’ initial save.

Llanrwst restored their two goal margin when Lee Allen found Mathew Evans who played a lovely through ball for Aron Jones who beat both Neil Perkins and Gwion Roberts to the ball to touch it home.

With the game heading into injury time Nefyn got what seemed to be a consolation goal on 90 minutes when Paul Roberts could only palm out Jason Jones’ shot and Llyr ap Gruffudd was following in to make the score 3-2.

Nefyn then had a corner in the fifth minute of stoppage time and completed their comeback when the ball deflected of Llanrwst’s Gareth Jennings and into his own net.

But Llanrwst were not to be defeated and following a Mathew Evans free kick in the sixth minute of stoppage time Gavin Jones fired home the rebound after Luke Roberts’ shot had been saved by Perkins.

The win saw Llanrwst climb up to fourth in the table only seven points behind leaders Rhydymwyn.

The Rwsters entertain Llandyrnog this Saturday and find themselves perfectly placed to close the gap on the leaders who are without a game.
