Football: Glan Conwy FC enjoy two great wins

GLAN Conwy are celebrating a double success following two impressive victories on the bounce in the Welsh Alliance.

And they will be hoping to make it three in a row this Saturday when they travel to local rivals Conwy United in the third round of the Barritt Cup.

Last Saturday Glan travelled to Barmouth and put in a superb performance to come away with a 4-2 win.

Glan dominated the opening stages and went ahead on 15 minutes when Aled Stapleton opened the scoring with a cool finish from inside the box after good work from Brad Jones.

Andy Booker then got a second for Glan a minute later with a stinging shot from the edge of the box.

To Barmouth’s credit they didn’t lie down and got a foothold in the game on 19 minutes as Shane Jones finished off a good move. And Jones added his second five minutes before the break when a long punt forward caught the visitors defence cold.

But Glan came out after the break firing on all cylinders, but were still indebted to goalkeeper Azzy Peel a minute after the restart for a superb save keeping Jones’ hat-trick effort out.

Liam Griffiths then set up Booker inside the box to curl a right foot shot past the keeper and Stapleton added this second and Glan’s fourth to wrap up the win with an excellent finish from 15 yards out.

Brad Jones hit the post and Sam Sinkinson hit the bar with a thunderous freekick from 25 yards as Glan threatened to turn it into a rout.

Saturday’s victory followed on from a 2-1 win over Holywell in midweek.

Stapleton was again on fire and slammed home the opener in the first minute to give Glan the early initiative after a good through ball from Nathan Jones.

Holywell then had a good spell of possession and deservedly equalised on 22 minutes when Wayne Edwards crossed for Dave Higan to head in from 12 yards.

But Booker got the winner with 15 minutes remaining when he lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box.
