Rugby Union: Nant Cowny in irresistable form

NANT CONWY 27 MOLD 13

WRU DIVISION ONE NORTH

AFTER making a storming start with a first-minute try there was no looking back from champions Nant who maintained their 100% record with an eighth straight victory.

The Conwy Valley side struck soon after the kick-off when winger Sion Horan opened up the Mold back line to register the opening score.

Mold replied with an Ollie Jenner penalty after six minutes before Nant centre Daniel Newcombe twice broke through the back-line to pocket a brace of tries out on the left.

Jenner’s second penalty kept the Flintshiremen in the contest with a 15- 6 scoreline at the changeover.

Six minutes into the second stanza Grant Jones crashed over for the hosts after some strong pressure from the pack to secure the bonus point. Carwyn Ellis converted to make it 22-6.

As the half progressed, Nant took control more and more although the wet and slippery ball and conditions caused a few knock-ons.

Second-row Medwyn Vaughan then grounded for his second try in successive games to complete the home team’s scoring with five minutes left.

Mold replied with arguably a deserved consolation try through wing Ritchie Hopkins, Jenner adding the extras.

After the match, Nant head coach Elwyn Williams (pictured) ominously warned there was more to come from the champions.

"At the moment we’ve still got a lot of players out injured, and I think we can still get a lot better when they all come back to fitness," he said.

"I’m sure a few teams have got players missing, but all things being equal we are in a good position and we still have players to come back and we can still get even better."

Williams added: "Mold are always one of those teams we were going to have to beat if we wanted to do something again this season.

"But now they have lost three games on the bounce and it is looking like a bit of an uphill battle for them.

"Ruthin lost again on Saturday and while I’m not making any kind of a prediction at all, it is starting to look like a bit of a two-horse race."

There will now be a short break for Nant with the next scheduled match a North Wales Cup tie at home to Llanidloes on November 14.
