Football: Llandudno Junction and Glan Conwy to meet in Welsh Trophy

LLANDUDNO Junction and Glan Conwy will clash at the Flyover Ground in the northern quarter- finals of the FAW Welsh Trophy on November 21.

The Welsh Alliance rivals were paired together in a fourth round draw which also sees giant-killers Penmaenmawr Phoenix travel to past Trophy winners Rhos Aelwyd.

On Saturday the Junction ran out 5-1 winners at Gwynedd League outfit Bodedern.

Seeking a seventh straight win, Shane Cartwright’s men made an uncharacteristic flat start and it was against the run of play when Jake Cassidy fired them in front on 32 minutes.

Darrel Jones’ first goal of the season and a now trademark free-kick from Dwyfor Williams made it 3-0 at the interval.

There was a real let-off for the visitors early in the second period when Bodedern hit the post from close range with an open goal gaping.

But Junction were soon back in the box seat and Williams proved he is not a one- trick pony by scoring from a near post free-kick strike on 53 minutes.

Mike Lundstram coolly added a fifth on the hour.

Dion Donohue nabbed a consolation for the Anglesey side but the Railwaymen finished much the stronger, James Hobson hitting the crossbar from 40 yards and Cassidy, Lundstram and Danny Mercer all going close.

"The FAW Trophy is a competition that is high in our list of priorities for the season," said manager Cartwright.

"It’s a cup we want to have a good run in and I think we stand a realistic chance of winning.

"Who would bet against us! Our attacking football frightens teams as it should with strikers like Mike, Jake and Paul – we fear nobody."

Junction and Glan Conwy have an early chance to weigh each other up this Saturday as they meet in the league at the Flyover, kick-off 2.30pm.

PENMAENMAWR PHOENIX of the Clwyd League upset the apple cart with a 2-1 win over Pwllheli in the Trophy third round.

Craig Roberts gave Pen a 32nd minute lead and although Dylan Thomas equalised in the second half, Scott Williams grabbed the winner two minutes from time.

GLAN CONWY advanced to the next stage but needed extra time to see off cup fighters Corwen 2-1 at Cae Ffwt.

Calvin Davies put the Welsh National League Premier Division visitors ahead on 10 minutes but Aled Stapleton levelled soon after.

There were no further goals until the added 30 minutes when Joe Williams plundered the decider in the first period.

LLANRWST UNITED suffered a heartbreaking defeat on penalties at Welsh Alliance leaders Rhydymwyn.

The Rwsters went into the game high on confidence having put five goals without return past Halkyn in their previous encounter.

United welcomed back last season’s top scorer Lee Allen and centre-half Owain Hughes, both returning after injury.

The comebacking pair had to settle for a place on the bench as the starting 11 remained the same.

Llanrwst started brightly with Luke Roberts and Aron Jones causing problems with their pace.

It was through Jones that the visitors took the lead midway through the first half, following neat play and a string of passes down their left.

Despite having the better of the possession it took until midway through the second half for Rhydymwyn to break down the resolute Rwsters defence when Matthew Hardy made it 1-1.

Llanrwst had a chance to snatch a late winner when Roberts beat the last defender only for the referee to blow for full time as advanced on goal.

Extra time was played out and neither side could break the deadlock with Llanrwst finishing the stronger.

The match went to penalties and Rhydymwyn progressed for a fourth round tie at Llanberis.

Llanrwst return to league action this weekend with a home game against fifth- placed Nefyn United.

Llanrwst United Reserves moved into the second round of the Clwyd League Halkyn Cup with a 2-1 victory over Aston Park Rangers Reserves thanks to two goals from Sion Jones.
