COLWYN Bay narrowly missed out on securing their first win of the Division One North season, but were their own worst enemies at Denbigh, going down 15-13.
A missed conversion late in the game following a Chris Hughes try would have brought the luckless visitors level at 15-15, and worse was to follow as they missed a relatively straight forward penalty in the dying moments that would have given them a one-point victory.
The victory was Denbigh’s first of the season, while defeat sees the Bay rooted to the foot of the table, two points adrift of newcomers Bro Ffestiniog.
The Bay had the edge in the pack and were dominating the scrums, and also utilised their driving maul to good effect, which lead to their two tries.
Colwyn Bay led 8-5 at half time courtesy of a Chris Hughes try and an Adam Hughes penalty, while Denbigh had taken the lead through a try from full-back Arwyn Jones following good work from wing Phil Morris.
Winger Daniel O’Sullivan’s first league try and a Gavin Rizzi touchdown put the hosts 15-8 to the good, but the Bay rallied and Hughes’ second score reduced the deficit to two points, only for the subsequent conversion and later easy penalty to be missed by the visitors.
The Bay entertain title hopefuls Ruthin at Brookfield Drive on Saturday.
