Bowls: Rhos Park roast Llanrwst in convincing home win

RHOS Park A remain among the front runners in the North Wales Coast League Section A following Saturday’s 10-4 home victory over Llanrwst.

The win keeps Rhos, last season’s runners-up, in third spot just four points behind Colwyn Bay RBL and leaders Beaumaris.

Best winners for Rhos were Ivor Jones and Ian Lawley, both 21-8, while former British champion John Bailey prevailed 21-7 for Llanrwst.

Promoted Blaenau Ffestiniog lost 8-6 at home to Beaumaris, while third-placed St Asaph lost ground with a 9-5 defeat in their match-of-the-day at Colwyn RBL.

Deganwy Ventilation showed their teeth with an 11-3 rout of relegation-threatened Bangor City, but Caernarfon lost out 11-3 at lowly Penmaenmawr.

Dyserth boosted their promotion hopes in Section B with a 8-6 victory at Eirias Park, Andy Jones carding a 21-1 to help tip the balance as Howard Vayro topped the Eirias list.

Strong promotion candidates Holyhead again impressed as Jason Rossington 21-3, Jack Hughes and Dave Jones both 21-4 laid the foundations for a 11-3 rout of struggling Vardre in Section C, while Abergele pushed Beaumaris all the way before being edged out 8-6.

Bill Glazier 21-10 could not prevent Highbury from falling 9-5 at home to Mochdre, J A Jones 21-8 for the visitors, while Kinmel Bay were wearing the smiles after sinking Rhyl 10-4 in their Section D derby.

Philip Jones 21-5 could not save Old Colwyn from a 9-5 defeat at Denbigh B.

VALE OF CLWYD BOWLS

BIG two St Asaph and Sunny Rhyl turned up the pressure with ominous double-figures wins to pull further clear of the field in Division A.

Reigning champions Saints swept to a 13-1 victory over Kinmel Bay A, Ian Trickett 21-3 and Lewis Scott 21-4 heading the honours list, but formidable Sunny Rhyl were not far behind with a 12-2 rout of Rhuddlan A at the Botanical Gardens.

Hosts Old Colwyn pulled off a 10-4 verdict against Abergele A, Mary Darling 21-9 the visitors pick.

In Division B, Abergele B went down 4-10 at home to Llysfaen.

THE Welsh qualifying rounds of the Isherwood Trophy, the national competition for veterans, took place at Llysfaen recently.

Two local players, Nev Bancroft and John Matthews, qualified and now go forward to the final day to represent Wales. There will be 32 players from 16 counties in the event at Prees in Shropshire on July 1.

COLWYN BAY RBL take on Sunny Rhyl in the Binns Cup quarter-finals at Old Colwyn this Friday.

Other ties: Abergele v St Asaph A (at Meliden), Meliden v St Asaph B (at Rhyl), Eirias Park v Rhuddlan (at Abergele).

ST ASAPH’S Lewis Scott is top of the WPA Ranking round-robin competition which features the finest crown green bowlers in Wales.

The latest round was held at Brymbo Sports Complex and group winners were: AM – Andrew Hughes, Lewis Scott, Geraint Jones, Mike Gilpin, John Evans. PM – Carl Lewis, Arwel Davies, Geraint Williams, Peter Jones, Darren Lacey.

There is all to play for in the last round in July, where from, the top 16 players in the league will play on August 16 to determine the overall winner.

Scott heads the table on points difference from Gresford Colliery’s Andrew Hughes and Kevin Nicholas and Llanrwst’s John Bailey.
