YOUNGSTERS across the region will be given the chance to try their hand at becoming the next Kevin Pietersen or Andrew Flintoff, thanks to Mochdre cricket club.
The club has been presented with the Chance to Shine award and is one of only a few clubs around England and Wales to take on the initiative, in a bid to produce the next generation of cricketers and help them follow in the footsteps of Ashes winners such as Flintoff and Pietersen.
The scheme is a national idea to bring competitive cricket to state schools and seeks to provide the educational and social benefits that team sports offer children.
In partnership with two Colwyn Bay secondary schools, Bryn Elian and Eirias High, and two primary schools, Pendorlan and Cystennin, Mochdre will now provide qualified coaches each week during the summer term.
As part of the initiative Glamorgan’s education liason officer Peter Edwards visited Ysgol Pendorlan, where pupils were given the chance to take part in a question-and-answer session covering the role of Glamorgan in Welsh cricket and the upcoming Ashes series, with one Test being played at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff.
The pupils then had a chance to display their skills in a series of activities run by Peter Edwards, Gerallt Jones and Neil Campion.
Anyone interested in joining Mochdre’s junior section can attend net practice at the club on Monday’s for under-11s, Tuesday’s for under-13s and on Wednesday’s for under-15s, from 6-7.30pm.
