Rugby Union: Llandudno beaten by Bro Ffestiniog

LLANDUDNO 36 BRO FFESTINIOG 43

WEAK tackling was the chief reason Llandudno were on the wrong end of a high scoring home defeat at Maesdu Road on Saturday.

In a frantic match, the Seasiders failed to improve their league position in WRU Division One North as Bro took the honours.

Tudno struggled in the set scrums against the Ffestiniog pack, losing the ball on numerous occasions.

From a set-piece it was the visitors who opened the scoring when the ball was kicked ahead with winger Daniel Jones outpacing the home defence, Barry Roberts converting.

Llandudno hit back almost immediately when from a line-out the ball reached winger James Gregson who left his opposite winger to ground under the posts, Tom Hocknell adding the extras.

The home spectators were hoping for a comfortable win, as the side was strengthened by the return of captain and outside-half Rhodri Carlton Jones and No8 Kelvin Davies from the RGC 1404 squad.

Gregson again showed his pace with another try when the ball was moved quickly along the backs.

However, Bro finished the first half strongly with three more tries by Daniel Jones (2) and Owen Roberts with Barry Roberts improving two.

At the start of the second half a quick tap penalty caught Bro’s defence by surprise with flanker Lloyd Griffith getting the touchdown and Hocknell converting.

Bro responded with a Barry Roberts penalty.

A driving maul after a lineout saw Kelvin Davies break to gain a touchdown, Hocknell adding two more points, and a further penalty by him brought the scores level at 29-29 with about 10 minutes left.

During this period, however, the home defence failed to make crucial tackles which allowed Bro to secure the win with a further two tries by captain and No8 Dewi Jones, which Roberts converted.

Kelvin Davies notched a second try improved by Carlton Jones to seal the hosts a losing bonus point.
