Rugby Union: Llandudno edge out Pwllheli

LLANDUDNO 23 PWLLHELI 20

DEJA VU struck Llandudno for the second week running, however, this time they finished on the right side of a last gasp score.

The previous week a late try denied Llandudno at least a share of the spoils at Caernarfon, yet on Saturday it was they who benefited from a last gasp score to secure a hard fought home win over Pwllheli.

And they will be hoping for further reward this weekend as they make the trip to take on top flight newcomers Bethesda.

Against Pwllheli, Llan took an early lead with typical handling and flowing movement involving all the back line as winger Simon Beards being sent clear to get the final touchdown.

Pwllheli are a side that always come back at you and using their heavier pack, drove over the homeside try line to even up the score and then took the lead in similar fashion moments later.

At this stage it was the visitors who were on top with their big pack of forwards again driving over the try line for a converted try.

Rhodri Carlton Jones hit two penalties either side of the interval to bring his team within a point. Tudno responded just before break with a penalty from Rhodri Carlton Jones, who added a second shot at goal moments after the interval to bring the home side to within a point of Pwll.

The visitors were soon down to 14 men after their prop was sent to the sin-bin and Llan took full advantage giving Llan the advantage at the set piece and from the back of a scrum near the Pwll line, as No8 Kelvin Davies picked up from the base of a scrum to drive over, drove over, with Carlton Jones converting. to put Tudno back into the lead.

Back again came Pwllheli with a try from their pack after they returned to full numbers and they then took the lead 20-18 with a penalty.

But Llandudno were not to be deprived of a second home win of the season and stepped up the pace, taking the game to the visitors. And from a quickly taken penalty near the line Davies forced his way over for a second try of the match to ensure the win.

Man of the Match was Aaron Evans, and match sponsor St Davids Commercial Estate Agents.
