Rugby Union: Nant Conwy dominate Llandudno

NANT Conwy go into Saturday’s home clash with title rivals Mold on the back of a confidence boosting try rout at local rivals Llandudno last weekend.

The defending champions notched nine tries and held Llandudno scoreless as they made it seven wins out of seven to stay top of the pile and favourites to retain their title.

Nant took 20 minutes to score the first try of the match when Gerallt Owain touched down, but this was added to moments later as skipper Carwyn Ellis crossed for the first of his four. Both conversion attempts were missed and up until that point the Llandudno pack had been really competing well.

A penalty from fly-half Llywarch ap Myrddin on the half hour mark put Nant 13-0 up, before Ioan Davies completed a fine move by the visitors’ backs right on half time, touching down underneath the posts to give ap Myrddin the simplest of conversion attempts.

Nant continued to dominate proceedings after the break and with little more than 10 minutes gone in the half, Ellis added his second touchdown, with ap Myrddin again making the extras count.

A very good move across the pitch followed and was finished off superbly by Grant Jones, the full- back diving over in the corner, while Ellis completed his hat-trick soon after, this time running off the base of a scrum close to the Llandudno line.

But Ellis had a lot more work to do to grab his fourth of the match, as he forced his way over from eight yards out.

From then on, the match was played with uncontested scrums as Llandudno did not have sufficient fit front-row players, and Nant added two further tries, a second for Owain and one from lock Med Vaughan, both added to by ap Myrddin.
