Rugby Union: Nant Conwy claim win from thriller

LLANGEFNI 26 NANT CONWY 30

WRU Division One North

ANOTHER thriller with both sides playing open rugby saw champions Nant pinch a narrow verdict at Cae Smyrna.

Ioan Davies scored the first try after only six minutes against his former club, with Llywarch ap Myrddin converting.

Llangefni equalised after 10 minutes when their lock Rhys Owen scored a try, improved by Arwel Roberts.

Five minutes later, Trystan Sion, Nant’s young winger intercepted a pass in his own 22 and ran the length of the pitch at pace to score under the posts, ap Myrddin adding extras.

From the kick-off, Llangefni were adjudged to foul and ap Myrddin landed a penalty from the left wing.

But the home side hit back almost immediately, their left winger Dave Williams intercepting a pass during a Nant attack and grounding under the sticks with Roberts adding two points.

Then, Llangefni’s Tom Williams chased a long defensive kick downfield, had an extremely lucky bounce and scored a try beneath the posts again, with Roberts yet again improving to make the half time score 21-17 against the run of play.

Ap Myrddin kicked two further penalties during the first half hour of the second half when both sides were playing good rugby.

Then, Davies scored his second try to complete an excellent handling move by the Nant back line, with ap Myrddin again splitting the posts.

During the final minutes, while pressing, Nant offended twice and Llangefni opted to kick the penalty goals over the touchline. After the second throw-in, Cefni’s pack pushed their way over the try line, hooker Emyr Williams claiming the score.

Nant make the short journey on Saturday to take on Llandudno.

After a promising start to the season Llandudno have found the going tough recently.

Last week Tudno were downed 60-6 at home against Pwllheli, and on Saturday suffered a second crushing defeat as they lost 81-14 at Caernarfon, who notched 13 tries in their win.

Llandudno replied with two tries, from Tony Hocknell and Rhodri Carlton Jones, who converted both.
