ABERGELE 45 LLANGOLLEN 9
North Wales Cup
ABERGELE took a breather from league duties and earned comfortable progression into the next round of the North Wales Cup at the expense of Llangollen at Pentre Mawr on Saturday.
Joe Lavin’s men were rarely troubled by the opposition scoring six unanswered tries and bossing every facet of the game.
Gele’s power was obvious from the start as the Llan scrum was under immense pressure and buckled on more than one occasion and it was the hosts’ physical advantage that brought about the game’s opening score.
A fine line-out take by Simon Hughes allowed the pack to form a maul from which hooker Dylan Evans benefited by claiming the spoils that belonged to the whole pack. Gaz Evans improved the score.
Fit again Ashley Wynne showed everyone what they had been missing with an almost faultless display and the first try of his hat-trick quickly followed as his neat footwork evaded the desperate defence and put some daylight between the teams.
Llan’s only response was to punish some ill discipline by slotting over a series of penalty shots. Otherwise the visitors had no response to the Swordsmen’s greater control of the game.
Chris Marsh, Gethin Jones and Ashley Wynne’s tries complemented by another 13 points from the boot of Gareth Evans gave Gele their straightforward passage into the next round.
Sterner tests will surely follow, but nobody will relish the prospect of facing a rampant Abergele at the moment.
