Rugby Union: Abergele thump Caernarfon side

ABERGELE 40 CAERNARFON 2NDS 0

AN impressive start to the season for Abergele continued with a six-try unanswered victory against a spirited Caernarfon side.

Wet and blustery conditions made ball handling tricky but in the end Gele’s sheer power made the scoreline look more comfortable than it was.

Gareth Evans broke the deadlock with a penalty, then a Cofi line out five metres from their own try line was hastily fed to their scrum-half whose kick was charged down by Dylan Evans allowing skipper Joe Lavin to fall on the loose ball to claim the touchdown. A further Evans penalty extended Gele’s lead.

A fine move involving all the backs resulted in Chris Smith crossing, making it 16-0 at the interval.

Strong running from Alan Wraight, Daz Peters and Gareth Bolton troubled the visitors constantly but the opening score of the second period was pure first phase rugby as Smith bagged his brace, abandoning his wing, claiming an inside ball from Owen Lynam and crossing the line untouched.

Gele then started to enjoy themselves and increased their score and with it claimed the bonus point as Evans powered over.

A further two tries followed from Richard Meddlicott and man of the match Wraight, both converted by the impressive boot of Anthony Tilley to round off the scoring.

The scoreline was more impressive than the performance and Gele know their unbeaten record will be severely tested as they travel to Llangefni this Saturday.
