Rugby: Nant Conwy extend lead at the top

NANT CONWY extended their lead at the top of Division One North to seven points after winning a battle in the mud 8-6 at Pwllheli.

On a quagmire of a pitch which prevented any kind of open play, full-back Trystan ap Howell went over for the only try of the game, with Carwyn ap Myrddin adding a penalty to give Nant a 8-0 half-time lead.

Pwllheli rescued the deficit with two penalties from winger Gethin Roberts as conditions deteriorated in the second half, but Nant held out in a tense finish to claim an important win.

"It was an absolute mud bath and just stopped either side from being able to play any kind of rugby, but it was very important to get a win to keep the pressure on Caernarfon," reported assistant coach Mark Jones.

Second-placed Caernarfon, however, do now have two games in hand after their match against Colwyn Bay was postponed.

NANT CONWY have been awarded £20,000 by the Welsh Rugby Union from a £250,00 Foundation for Sports and Arts grant designed to help improve facilities at grassroots clubs.

The money is to be used to extend the clubhouse at Trefriw to provide a function room, events bar, meeting room and store room.

Junior club chairman Nick Jones said: "Over the last 15 years we have built up a junior section comprising of nearly 200 members and it is practically impossible to feed up to 10 teams on match days as there is nowhere for the children to eat.

"We have already raised £20,000 ourselves to match fund the grant and are hoping the project will be completed within two years."
