Rugby: Nant Conwy maintain form ahead of Colwyn Bay game

NANT CONWY go into this Saturday’s league game at Colwyn Bay having maintained their winning form with a six-try win over Division Five South strugglers Glais to reach the third round of the Swalec Welsh Cup.

But they had to come from behind after their opponents took a 9-0 lead with three penalties, when kicking with the strong wind behind them in the first half.

Nant Conwy, however, were in front by half-time and scored tries at regular intervals in a one-sided second half to finish runaway winners.

Nant’s tries came from hooker Wyn Roberts, outside-half Owen Jones, prop James Jones, flanker Arwyn Owen and wings Ifan Jones and Carwyn ap Merddin, with the latter adding the goal kicks.

That’s eight wins on the trot for the high-flying Conwy Valley side and coach Elwyn Williams commented: "We have been able to keep a settledside together and are reaping the benefit of that."

Nant Conwy have now scored over 250 points in their last six games, but the coach is taking nothing for granted on Saturday.

"But we are still expecting a tough game at Colwyn Bay," he said this week.

COLWYN BAY...............................13

KIDWELLY...................................20

COLWYN BAY were badly hit by injuries, particularly in the second row, for their Swalec Cup game against Division Two West side Kidwelly, but put up a battling display before losing 20-13.

Skipper Bryn Williams is out with a broken bone in his hand and Chris Hughes had to be replaced at the last minute after breaking down in the pre-match warm-up.

Despite the problems, the Bay kept themselves in contention throughout with the help of a penalty try when Dave Brown was pulled down just short of line and was prevented from scoring by a Kidwelly player going over the top.

Ashley James kicked a conversion and two penalties and the two sides were only a try and conversion apart at the end.
