Football: Llanrwst United FC dismantle Llanrug

LLANRUG UNITED 1 LLANRWST UNITED 5

FIVE-GOAL Llanrwst could hardly have given themselves a bigger boost ahead of this Saturday’s crunch clash at Parc Gwydir against Welsh Alliance leaders Holyhead Hotspur.

Leighton Griffiths’ side produced a fine team performance to romp to one of their most emphatic away victories in this league.

The Rwsters took an early lead on five minutes at Eithin Duon, Adam Jones slotting in at the far post following a defensive misunderstanding.

The possession for the rest of the half was equally shared but it was the visitors who created.

And for their endeavours in the final seconds of the half they were awarded a penalty, as United’s Mathew Phillips tripped veteran midfielder Rhys Davies. Davies picked himself up to drive the spot-kick into the bottom corner of the net.

Llanrug pressed hard for a goal after the interval, but the visitors counter-attacked on 53 minutes and with the hosts appealing for offside Aron Jones was allowed to run through and slot home.

Within two minutes it got worse for the hosts, midfielder Jamie Turner hammering the ball into the top corner of the net following a low flag-kick from the left to make it 4-0.

Llanrug were given a slight hope on the hour mark, unmarked midfielder Ceirion Williams driving into the bottom corner following an excellent free-kick by Mathew Phillips, but an almighty freakish howler by home goalkeeper Dave Ball on 63 minutes killed Llanrug off.

A goal-kick from his hands was driven into the back of United’s full-back Gethin Phillips, and the ball fell kindly for Rwsters striker Aron Jones to place into an empty net for his 12th goal of the campaign.

Llanrug dominated the final 20 minutes and created several good opportunities, but the visitors’ rearguard held firm.

Goal-line clearances on three occasions denied the hosts, and Llanrwst keeper Paul Roberts produced an excellent save from Iwan Price on 76.
