CEFN DRUIDS 1 LLANDUDNO 1
ALTHOUGH his team picked up a commendable draw at then Huws Gray Alliance leaders Druids on Saturday, Llandudno’s assistant manager Grant Montgomery felt the overall performance deserved more.
The result kept the Seasiders in seventh place, just on the heels of the leading pack.
"We could have got more out of the game, but lacked the finishing touch," said assistant boss Montgomery.
"The position we’re in now, we’ve got to start turning these tight games against the top sides into victories."
The Ancients edged ahead in the eighth minute when Tom Obasi’s low cross from the right into a crowded box went in off Llandudno defender Ben Dews – although the goal was credited to opponent Ashley Wilson.
"Ben couldn’t get out of the way and we attach no blame to him at all for the goal," stressed Montgomery.
Tudno were unlucky not to equalise in the 37th minute when Alec Williams’ strike came back off the foot of a post.
Williams even more unfortunate in the second half when he met a firm byeline Lee Thomas cross with a thunderous scissor kick which rebounded off the underside of the bar and the ball was then desperately cleared by Druids keeper Chris Mullock.
Cefn went close to a second when Richard Williams-Cooke’s shot was well saved by Paul Whitfield and the loose ball was cleared before Mike Cronshaw could pounce.
With Druids lacklustre overall, they were unable to get that second goal which would have sealed the points and the visitors took advantage in the 82nd minute.
Ryan Williams, who came on as a second half substitute after a long injury lay-off, fed the ball to Thomas whose shot was kept out by Mullock, but the ball looped into the air and left Tony Cann with the luxury of heading into an empty net from two yards.
"Ryan Williams gave us real impetus when he came on," said Montgomery.
"We were also excellent defensively with Neil Coverley and Tim Brandreth really strong at the back."
Next up for the Seasiders is Buckley Town this Saturday at Maesdu Park (2.30pm).
"We played them in the first game of the season at their place and squeezed a 1-0 win in a very tight game," recalled Montgomery.
"Buckley are a very strong team, the two sets of players know each other well and we’re expecting the usual hard game from them."
Llandudno will add defender Wyn Williams, unavailable at Druids due to him attending a wedding, to the squad, but midfielder Joe Morgan is still suspended.
Montgomery also revealed the club has put in seven days’ notice of approach on a striker in a bid to strengthen the team’s firepower.
Llandudno FC is in urgent need of a prefabricated cabin or large shed to store equipment for its junior teams.
