CONWY UNITED 6 HOLYWELL TOWN 0
HAT-TRICK hero Toby Jones inspired a stunning victory for Conwy who could take top spot in Welsh Alliance Division One this Saturday if they win at bottom side Caernarfon Town and leaders Holyhead Hotspur fail to grab three points at Llanrwst.
The Musselmen, whose boss Paul Moroney was named league Manager of the Month for November, were in destructive form against the Wellmen at Y Morfa.
After three minutes a neat pass from Ricky Jones put Toby Jones clear of the defence and he had no difficulty in opening the scoring when his shot beat the Holywell keeper from the edge of the box.
Town tried to make amends for this early setback but were finding the home rearguard in a mean mood and although they were working hard in midfield their defence was looking distinctly flat-footed.
With Ian Pattinson going close and Jamie Jones having a couple of chances it seemed that the second goal would not be long in coming for the Tangerines.
And on 28 minutes Ricky Jones again played the role of provider as his pass put Toby Jones in to score his second.
The hosts were now in control and two minutes later a free-kick from the left was headed goalwards by Mark Orme and went into the net off Rob King, who claimed the goal.
In the remaining 15 minutes of the half Conwy could have increased their lead with Paul Cassidy and Jamie Jones both going close while Holywell were not making any inroads and gave the returning Kyle Dent in the home goal a pretty quiet 45 minutes.
The second half started as the first ended with Conwy taking the game to the visitors, Cassidy going near again before the Morfa men increased their lead in the 57th minute.
A free-kick was awarded wide on the right and the ball was put in to the far post, the keeper remaining static as King rose high to head home.
Despite the protests of the Holywell players the goal stood.
Moroney’s marauders were now passing the ball around with a lot of confidence and Cassidy on the left and Ricky Jones on the right were causing all sorts of problems for the Wellmen’s defence.
In the 63rd minute Jamie Jones had a goal disallowed for a dubious offside decision and Joe Williams had a thunderous drive from 25 yards fly just wide of the post.
Then the 65th minute saw Toby Jones complete his hat-trick when following a free-kick he latched onto a loose ball in the box to score.
At this point Holywell had lost any real interest and a little discipline at times as the referee had to work hard to keep all 22 of the players on the pitch with one or two niggly tackles flying in.
By now the result was never in doubt and it was left to returning substitute Ollie Walters to round off the rout when he toe-poked home through a crowd of players in added time.
Conwy United went unbeaten throughout November, making Paul Moroney a worthy Manager of the Month award winner.
The Musselmen thrashed Barmouth and Dyffryn United 5-0, then beat Glan Conwy 2-0 and Llanrwst United 3-1 in the league, as well as winning 4-2 at Glantraeth in the FAW Welsh Trophy to book a quarter-final tie with Swansea Dockers in the new year.
