CONWY UNITED 5 BARMOUTH & DYFFRYN 0
WITH Welsh Alliance Division One leaders Holyhead Hotspur away on Welsh Cup duty Conwy took the opportunity to reduce the gap at the top with a 5-0 blitzing of Barmouth at Y Morfa on Saturday.
The Musselmen were in front within three minutes when Jamie Jones held off a strong challenge to skilfully place the ball beyond keeper Darren Andrews with the outside of his left foot from just inside the area.
Jones was causing problems down the left and went close on a couple of occasions, with chances also falling to Ian Pattinson, Toby Jones and Paul Cassidy but there was no further score before the break.
The second half started with Conwy showing more desire than their opponents and in the 54th minute Pattinson increased the lead with a header from six yards.
Bermo then had a brief spell when they tried to rescue the game but the Tangerines, with that extra goal cushion, were increasing the pressure.
After 72 minutes Toby Jones struck when he scored from 12 yards out with a low drive that beat everyone to end up in the back of the net.
The hosts were well on top now and chances were coming thick and fast. Ricky Jones was unlucky to see a shot from a narrow angle hit the side-netting and Cassidy had a goal disallowed when, although he came from behind a defender to score, the assistant deemed him to be offside.
On the other side Jamie Jones was getting plenty of crosses in which at times brought desperate defending from the Barmouth players but they were doing just enough to keep the home team forwards at bay.
Then the game was really put to bed when, in the 83rd minute, Toby Jones broke free of the Barmouth defence and chipped the ball over the advancing keeper from all of 20 yards.
Paul Moroney's side were not done yet though and when Jamie Jones was brought down in the area right on 90 minutes the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty which was converted by Toby Jones to complete his hat-trick.
CONWY UNITED RESERVES defeated Caernarfon League Division Two leaders Bethesda Athletic Reserves 5-3 on a blustery night at Y Morfa last Thursday.
After twice going behind, goals from Callum Vernon (3), Connor Tierney and Rob Marshall proved too much for a plucky Bethesda who replied with goals from Matthew Jones (2) and Darren Ishmael.
