Football: Disappointment for Llanrwst United FC

RHYDYMWYN travelled to Gwydir park aiming to complete a league double and inflict a first home defeat of the season on the Conwy Valley club, while victory for the Rwsters would have taken them to within two points of the league leaders.

It was Rhydymwyn that opened the scoring with only seven minutes on the clock when a through ball from midfield found Adam Renshaw onside and through on goal, and the striker kept his composure to beat Paul Roberts in the Llanrwst goal.

Llanrwst had the better of the first half but could not find a way past the Rhydymwyn defence and the advantage remained with the Flintshire side at half time.

The Rwsters came out battling for the second half but it was Rhydymwyn that got the opportunity to double their advantage, when much to everyone’s surprise, including the visiting players, the linesman saw fit to award a penalty after he deemed that one of the Llanrwst players had handballed following a cross from the Llanrwst right. This was to prove a key decision when Jay Hughes stepped up to make it 2-0 to Rhydymwyn.

Rhydymwyn then got their third goal when a free kick on the halfway line deflected off the Llanrwst defenders head and into his own net.

It was only once they were 3-0 down that Llanrwst really pushed on and tested the Rhydymwyn defence, with Jamie Williams hitting the upright and Danny Stanton in the Rhydymwyn goal pulling off a number of saves late on, but Llanrwst’s late push was to prove futile with the league leaders holding onto their three goal advantage to stretch their lead at the top of the table to seven points and inflict Llanrwst’s first home defeat in the league this season.

Llanrwst are at home to Pwllheli this Saturday (2.30pm) when a win for the visitors would see them leapfrog the Conwy side.
