Football: Colwyn Bay FC sign ex-Rhyl man Clampitt

COLWYN Bay manager Neil Young has boosted his midfield options for next season by recruiting 23-year-old Cammell Laird playmaker Carl Clampitt.

Clampitt started his career at Tranmere, Liverpool and Preston before a cruciate ligament injury prevented him signing a professional contract.

Another injury then scuppered a move to Scottish Premier League Hearts before he joined Lairds.

Clampitt was then loaned out to Shrewsbury before a short spell with then Conference North side Barrow in the summer of 2006 led to him being signed by Rhyl.

He left the Lilywhites at the beginning of December 2006 and returned to Lairds.

Clampitt is a competitive operator with good passing ability who turned in a number of impressive displays for Lairds in the Unibond Premier last season.

Young commented: “Carl is the type of player we have been looking for since I came to the club; he is good on the ball and will help make the rest of the team play.”

Another member of last season’s squad, experienced midfielder/defender Steve Aspinall, has also committed to the Bay.

Azza, who wore the captain’s armband on a number of occasions, scored eight goals last term.

A former Wigan youth centre forward will be joining for pre-season on trial while further signings are expected to be completed within the next week.

Colwyn Bay officials will be at the Bay View shopping centre this Saturday from 10am-2pm to promote upcoming Soccer Camps as well as selling tickets for a £10,000 prize Gold Bond draw.

The centre will also be running a Father’s Day prize draw with a pair of Bay season tickets up for grabs. Supporters can also purchase season tickets on the day.
