Football: Conwy United set up new signings after cup win

CONWY UNITED manager Eifion Hughes is hoping to further bolster his squad with two further signings this week after seeing his side reach the last eight of the Barritt Cup with an extra time victory over Barmouth.

He has also recently signed midfielder Gene Foulkes from Abergele and forward Joe Spencer and is happy with the way his squad is progressing.

Last weekend's cup win was a welcome boost after a poor run of results in December, although the manager commented: "The players still have to learn to carry out the instructions we give them in the dressing room.

"They failed to do that in the first half when we went 2-1 down, but they adapted themselves better in the second half and in extra time the fitness and stamina work we have done in training really started to pay off."

After taking the lead through Jamie Jones’s persistence, Conwy conceded an equaliser and then went behind from the penalty spot before Daz Evans equalised just before half- time.

In the second half Ryan Watson missed two good chances and Conwy also hit the post before good play by Steve Roberts and Watson set up a third goal for Chris Quinn.

A Barmouth equaliser against the run of play then took the tie into the extra half hour, but Conwy won the tie when Jamie Jones pulled the ball back from the byline for Bryn Phillips to score.

Abergele Rovers also went through to the quarter-finals with a 3-2 win at Llandyrnog Reserves.

After going behind in the first four minutes, Danny Campbell put Abergele level on the stroke of half-time and they won the tie with second half goals from Alun Jones and Danny Abbott.

Llansannan will also represent the Clwyd League in the last eight after a 3-2 win over Flint Reserves with Emyr Owen putting them in front at half-time and Gareth Lewis adding two second half goals.

But Llanrwst United saw their hopes of ousting unbeaten Welsh Alliance leaders Bethesda Athletic ended in a 2-0 home defeat.

Centre half Carl Thomas headed Bethesda in front at half-time following a corner and although Llanrwst pressed strongly early in the second half they couldn’t force an equaliser in the windy conditions.

Bethesda remained a threat on the break and after Paul Roberts had saved two one-on- ones with Gareth Davies and Mattie Hughes, Davies put Craig Roberts clear to score the killer second goal 10 minutes from the end.

Llandudno Junction's tie against Nefyn was postponed.
