Football: Seventh heaven for Glan Conwy FC as the goals rain down

“I WISH we could play in this competition every week!” The reaction of GLAN CONWY manager Paul Moroney after his team thrashed Mid-Wales League side Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant 7-2 in the Welsh Trophy second round on Saturday.

Having annihilated Newbridge-on-Wye 11-1 at the previous stage, Glan certainly have a liking for the Trophy and will fancy their chances of more success after landing another home draw with Welsh National League strugglers Borras Park Albion in round three.

After an hour, Saturday’s tie at Cae Ffwt was delicately balanced with Glan only 3-2 ahead but then four goals in 11 minutes put them out of sight.

Chris Beardmore made it 2-0 with strikes on four and 21 minutes, Mike Roberts replied for the visitors after 23, but a Shaun Shannon spot-kick extended Glan’s lead five minutes into the second period.

Arran Poole pulled another one back for Llanrhaeadr on the hour and it was nip and tuck before a Ross Howcroft Jones goal, a Brad Jones double and then a superb 25-yard chip to round off a sweeping move from Ashley Smith settled it in the hosts’ favour.

“I suppose it was a flattering scoreline but we had a bit more quality than they did although they were a hard-working side who closed us down very well and never gave up,” said manager Moroney.

“The difference was we put our chances away – I wish we could play in this competition every week!

“We seem to excel in this cup then go into our shells a bit in the league.”

Glan Conwy will look to build on their encouraging start to the Welsh Alliance campaign when then entertain winless Llanberis this Saturday (2.30pm).

Meanwhile in the Welsh Cup second round, Moroney’s men have been drawn away to Lex XI, a team which struggled in the Cymru Alliance last season but have transformed into quite a force this term.
