Football: League Cup defeat for Rhyl

RHYL suffered a shock 2-1 home defeat to Welshpool in the Welsh Premier League Cup on Tuesday night (Sept 2), just four days after their spectacular 5-1 television win over champions Llanelli in front of a crowd of over 900 last Saturday.

Steve Rogers and ex-Rhyl player Paul Roberts got Welshpool’s goals to bring the league leaders back to earth.
Not that  coach Alan Bickerstaffe was getting too carried away by last Saturday’s win, when two goals from man of the match Neil Roberts and one each for Greg Strong , Jamie Reed and Josh Johnson, overpowered the defending champions.

“We asked every player to earn themselves an 8 rating and they all achieved it to a man,” said Bickerstaffe. “But we’ve won absolutely nothing yet; there’s only three games gone. We got three points for today – that’s all.”

In other cup games on Tuesday night, Bangor City beat Porthmadog 3-0 with Les Davies scoring twice against his former club, while  Prestatyn Town lost 1-0 at home to Gap Connah’s Quay, with recent signing Andy Alston getting the only goal of the game.
