Cricket: Poor start for Colwyn Bay

COLWYN Bay Cricket Club began the season with a disappointing defeat at underdogs Southport and Birkdale in the Ray Digman Knockout Trophy.

Put into bat in this Group Eight clash after skipper Graeme Jones lost the toss, Premier Division Bay could only muster 112 all out off 33 grim overs.

Zac Gidlow and veteran Paul Jenkins each reached 20 with skipper Jones managing 15.

This modest total presented no problems for First Division Southport who coasted to 113-5 in 24 overs, despite Wales left arm spinner Jenkins taking 3-20 off nine.

Star young prospect Arthur Jones kept his testing seven overs tight in his impressive first team debut.

"Arthur showed what great potential he has but as far as the wider picture goes all that can be said is that we need to improve!" said skipper Jones.

This Saturday the Bay will look to bounce back when they entertain Caldy at Rhos-on- Sea.

LLANDUDNO begin their quest for a sixth successive North Wales Premier Division title when they entertain Pontblyddyn at The Oval this Saturday (1pm).

Mochdre face a tough opening fixture at home to last season’s Premier Division runners-up Bangor.

Relegated Llanrwst begin life in Division One with a trip to Halkyn and Conwy welcome Gresford to Bodlondeb for what should be a close encounter.
