Cricket: More joy for Llandudno

ANOTHER productive weekend for Llandudno saw them increase their lead at the North Wales Cricket League Premier Division summit to 56 points and reach the next stage of the Welsh Cup.

On Saturday, Tudno visited bottom side Llanrwst and elected to bat first, but encountered early problems as they dipped to 25-3.

The depth of the seasiders’ batting came to the fore, however, as Australian Gordon Kerr hit a team best 93 – including 12 fours and four sixes – and skipper Duncan Midgley posted 63 in a fourth-wicket stand of 109.

Llandudno were on 207-9 in the 41st over when Midgley declared having secured eight batting points.

For the Rwsters, Aussie Ryan Heywood claimed 3-16, Alwyn Williams 3-60 and Trefor Williams 2-39.

The game was there for Llanrwst to win, but Jack Rimmington grabbed two early wickets to leave the hosts 27-2.

Heywood and Nathan Jones put on 53 before the latter was caught behind off Sam Rimmington. All-rounder Heywood had slammed nine fours and two sixes before he went for 65 as Midgley brought back the opening bowlers with the score on 114-4.

From there the Llanrwst innings collapsed to 152 all out as Kerr and Jack Rimmington ripped through them leaving captain Tim Coleman 18 not out.

Jack Rimmington took a season’s best 6-35 off 15 overs to move on to 28 league wickets, Kerr adding 2-44 to seal a 28-6 points decision.

On Sunday, Llandudno travelled to Bethesda in the Welsh Cup and were asked to field first after losing the toss.

Pesda had made 166 when their final wicket fell in the 29th over, Gareth Edwards hitting a powerful 57, while Midgley scooped 4-24, Kerr 4-56 and Luke Regan 2-7 for the visitors.

Sam Rimmington, who has already passed 500 league runs for the campaign, also held together Tudno’s reply, posting 79 not out and hitting the winning four in a winning total of 169-7.

Midgley contributed 33 and Aled Williams 23 for the seasiders who now host Hawarden Park in the next round on July 4.

MOCHDRE chose to bat first against ST ASAPH and with good contributions from Will Evans (61) and Gareth Davies (55) the visitors looked to be set to make a reasonable total after their batting collapse of the previous week.

But from 160-6, Mochdre slumped to 173 all out in 44 overs as Asaph skipper Dave North took 5-42 and Matthew Hulse 3-41.

With the luxury of 66 overs to reach their target St Asaph, despite the loss of two early wickets, showed the sort of application that Mochdre have lacked in the last two weeks.

Overseas player Trevor Bauer with 85 not out and Chris Campbell (56 no) steered the hosts to a comfortable win at 174-2 in the 58th over, points 22-2.
