Cricket: Colwyn Bay relish derby after great victory

COLWYN Bay go into this Saturday’s North Wales derby at Northop Hall on a real high after a seven-wicket thrashing of Northern at the weekend in the Liverpool and District Competition Premier League.

Former skipper Paul Jenkins and exciting all- rounder Gareth Cross were the chief contributors in a cracking victory.

After current Bay captain Graeme Jones inserted the opposition, left-arm spin ace Jenkins snapped up 4-49 off 25 overs and Cross nabbed 3-40 to send back the visitors for 164.

Ryan Holtby also bagged 2-40 as Northern occupied the crease for a marathon 65 overs.

Former Wales ace Jenkins then switched roles when skipper Jones asked him to pad up ready to open the Bay’s innings and he responded by blasting 58 off just 48 deliveries.

After opener Caerwyn Williams had gone, Cross took up the cue and proceeded to hammer an unbeaten 69 off only 42 balls before he and Sion Morris (23no) secured a comfortable winning 165- 3 in the space of only 29 overs to wrap up a welcome 20-3 points victory.

"It was another tremendous performance that keeps us moving up the table," commented skipper Jones.

"I wanted Jenks to open so that we could get a bit of early momentum injected into our innings and he certainly delivered.

"He and Gareth were up for it from the start and it’s good to see the way we are building more confidence into our performances with every game we play."

Other results: Maghull (20) 208-9 (Gibbons 3-45, AB Jones 3-45) Colwyn Bay 2nds (7) 205-7 dec (Williams-Gray 41, Walburn 38).
