Cricket: Llandudno hit the top after big win

THERE is a familiar look to the top of the North Wales League Premier Division after Llandudno hit the summit following a 23 points to one win against St Asaph at the Alliance Taxis Oval on Saturday.

After a delayed start due to rain Tudno won the toss and elected to bowl, with the game reduced to a maximum of 84 overs.

The hosts made a great start with Australian Gordon Kerr having opener Joe Lunn caught behind by stand-in keeper Duncan Midgley with just one run on the board.

Saints showed some signs of recovery with their innings progressing to 31-1 and then 74-2 before left-arm spinner Sam Rimmington and the quicker Jack Rimmington began to scythe through the visitors’ batting line-up.

Sam Rimmington dismissed dangerous overseas player Trevor Bauer for 49 and St Asaph were all out for 121 in 42.4 overs, aided by some superb catches. Jack Rimmington picked up 4- 32 off 10 overs, Kerr 2-9 from 8.4 and Sam Rimmington 2-26 off nine.

More rain at the interval threatened an early finish, but play resumed on time and the seasiders put on 32 for the first wicket before Midgley departed for 14.

Smith followed for 29 and when Aled Williams and Chris Hardy perished cheaply there was still work to do, but Sam Rimmington (62 not out – seven fours and three sixes) and Kerr (13 no) led Tudno home on 122-4 off just 25.1 overs.

MOCHDRE’S Will Evans cracked 14 fours and seven sixes in a mammoth 130 but his team had to be content with a 17-9 winning draw against Hawarden Park.

Evans shared in an opening stand of 80 with the dashing Matt Wouldes (54) and then the young opener put on 167 for the third wicket with Gareth Davies (86 not out).

Mochdre eventually declared on 321- 5 off 48 overs, but Hawarden were to produce some good batting of their own.

At the close the Flintshire side were 232-3, James Hurlin 72 and Campbell Marr 58, with Davies notching 2-21 off nine very economical overs in the circumstances.

There was no play at Alder Meadow between Pontblyddyn and LLANRWST.

In Division One, CONWY earned a winning split at home to Bethesda.

Put into bat in a rain-restricted encounter, the Musselmen concocted a useful 183-5 declared off 36.5 overs, David Wilkinson smashing five fours and two sixes in his 56 not out, Edward Favill notching 33 and James Wilkinson 26 as the hosts recovered well from 39-3.

Pesda were then limited to 104-7, Shaun Davies 3-8, Daniel Davies 2-29.

LLANDUDNO SECONDS’ game at Bersham was rained off, but in Division Two ABERGELE enjoyed a welcome five-wicket triumph over Carmel.

Invited to bat, Carmel posted a moderate 137-8 off 41 overs, David Moulson by far the most impressive bowler with 4-25 off 12 overs.

In reply, Gele reached 139-5 off 37 overs, Martin Hedge 34 and Tony Ward 29 not out in a 7-3 verdict.

ST ASAPH SECONDS were pleased to finally get a win under their belts after five successive failures, beating Brymbo seconds by 64 runs at Elwy Park.

Jimmy Vaughan hit 60, Matthew Ryan 44 and Chris Campbell 39 in Saints’ total of 192-6 and the Steelmen could only muster 128-8 in response, the legendary Nigel Roberts unbeaten on 73, while Campbell nabbed 3-18, Jason Fawkes 2-30 and Adam El-Lamie 2-40.
