PAUL Jenkins stood down as first team skipper of Colwyn Bay Cricket Club following Saturday’s final day defeat at Maghull.
Welsh international spin bowler Jenkins, 36, a prolific wicket taker for the Bay in recent seasons, made the announcement immediately after the narrow loss in a close-fought Business Assistance Liverpool Competition Premier Division clash at Old Hall Field.
“Four years is long enough – I’ve had enough of them and they’ve had enough of me,” he joked.
“Seriously, I felt it was time to step down and let someone else take over. I hope to still stay on as a player.”
Put into bat, Colwyn posted 142 off 47.5 overs, Mitch van Wyk 35 and Patrick Leach 28, and Maghull replied with 143 for eight, Jenkins four for 38 to reach 62 league wickets for the season, Debasis Mohanty and Ryan Holtby two victims apiece. Points: 25-6 Maghull.
Bay finish seventh in the Premier while Maghull are relegated despite their last-day heroics.
Colwyn Bay 2nds were relegated from the 2nd XI Premier after being beaten by 96 runs (20-5) at home to Wigan.
The visitors chalked up 194, Alex Walburn four for 49 and Chris Rowley three for 45, and Bay were shot out for 98, Mal Gorton 31 and Glyn Gibbons 24.
Colwyn Bay’s 3rd XI finished the season in style with a 133-run win over Fleetwood Hesketh to secure runners-up spot in the Liverpool Premier League, but even the 25 points was not enough to overhaul title winners Orrell.
Bay set 246 for six, 16-year-old Tom Roberts 69, Anwar Awan 50, Zack Gidlow 36 and Jack Coates 33 and in reply Fleetwood were dismissed for 113, Mike McDonagh four wickets, Holtby and Awan two each.
