Residents help to reduce 3,000 tons of waste in Llanfairfechan

LLANFAIRFECHAN is one of the leading towns in Conwy county for recycling.

He added: “We’re also tackling areas across Conwy that are not recycling and putting out extra bags next to their bins. I’m delighted to say this is not the case in Llanfairfechan.”

Meanwhile, children at local schools have been busy getting green and encouraging their parents to do the same.

Ysgolion Babanod and Pant y Rhedyn are both active members of the Eco Schools Scheme which encourages schools to take on recycling initiatives.

“We used to use two big bins at the school, now we’re down to one,” said deputy headteacher at Ysgol Babanod, Heulwen Parry.

“We’ve got a paper bank box in the school which the whole community uses.

“We’ve also got a bottle and cardboard box outside the school.

“The whole school is recycling. The children are setting an example for their parents because they’re recycling so much. It influences parents to do the same.

“We’re also encouraging children to save energy. We’ve had our energy bills reduced by switching off computers and lights.”

This year Ysgol Babanod was awarded the green flag for its efforts to reduce waste and looking after a school garden.

Governor of Pant y Rhedyn Ray Jones said: “I was very pleased to hear that the project is so successful. The children are influencing their parents and grandparents and have had a significant impact on the community.”
