Hairdresser sets up academy for barbers in Penmaenmawr

A PENMAENMAWR hairdresser has set up an academy to create job opportunities for aspiring hairdressers.

Jo Groom of the Design Salon in Pant yr Afon has started training hairdressers at her village centre venue this week.

The former cruise ship manager is taking on individuals of all ages to learn new skills for future employment.

And already the hairdresser is busy teaching three up and coming ladies from Llanfairfechan and Llandudno Junction.

“We’ve got three starters. The girls are doing excellently,” said Jo who has been in the industry for over 20 years.

“We teach them basic hairdressing skills and also meeting, greeting, social etiquette and self promotion.

“They become fully qualified and they can have a job or they may want to go into education. We support them with whatever they decide.”

Future hairdressers will be put through a scheme that will last anything up to six months depending on skill levels.

“We’ve got to inject energy into Penmaenmawr. It’s important to promote that if you put your mind to it you can do anything in life.

“There’s nothing for the kids here. This gives the kids an opportunity. ”

The award winning hairdresser came out fifth in a national hairdressing competition in Blackpool last year.

Now, Jo hopes to compete against over 100 hairdressers across the UK in the event in March. After being trained in the famous Steiner Academy in London, the hairdresser went on to become a cruise ship manager, travelling all over the world.

“I’ve been to the Antarctic and Alaska but nothing beats Penmaenmawr,” said Jo.

Jo is working in collaboration with Anglesey based Mon training to offer the scheme.

County councillor Ken Stevens welcomed the scheme in the town.

“I’m supportive of anything that enhances the village,” said Mr Stevens.

“It’s fantastic – it gives people skills and an income. This should be the priority – getting jobs for our kids.
