TRIBUTES have been paid to a an ex-RAF steward from Llandudno who used to fly with Royalty and VIPs around for a living, after he sadly passed away recently aged just 57.
Stephen Foster Jones of Trinity Avenue, Llandudno, died peacefully at Llandudno Hospital on Saturday, August 21, surrounded by loved ones.
The youngest son of Emyr and Betty Jones and brother to Angela and Stuart, Stephen led a colourful life.
Born in Llandudno in 1953, he attended Lloyd Street Primary and John Bright Grammar School. He left school before completing his ‘O’ levels, to begin his career in catering at the St George’s Hotel in Llandudno, learning his trade from the bottom up.
“He was always restless,” said his brother Stuart.
“He moved from Llandudno and joined the RAF to further his catering career and see the world.
“He achieved both these goals whilst flying as a VIP Steward in VC10 jets based at Brize Norton, ferrying military personnel, world leaders and civic dignitaries around the world.
“Whilst serving in the forces, he had the honour of serving on the Queen’s flight, frequently meeting most of the Royal family.
“When he left the RAF, these contacts, previously made with Royalty, held him in good stead as he was contacted by the Queen Mother’s household and invited to go and work at Clarence House for Her Majesty as personal Footman to the Queen Mother, his duties were to prepare and organise the catering for Her Majesty, wherever she travelled. He also told us that whenever the Queen was visiting, his duty was to take the royal corgis for a walk – not one of his favourite tasks.
“Steve spent two happy years at the household before moving on to continue his adventures.
“When told of Steve’s passing, many people have commented what a nice gentleman he was.
“After many troubled years, Stephen is now at peace. He will be remembered by family and friends for his achievements, popularity and manners and he will be sadly missed by all.”
The funeral of Stephen Foster Jones will take place on Monday, September 6, at Mochdre crematorium at 2pm with drinks to follow at the RAOB Club, Madoc Street. All donations to Marl Ward, Llandudno Hospital.
