Conwy scout camp cash boost ends threat of closure

CONWY Scouts and Cubs were celebrating this week following the refurbishment of their campsite near Rowen.

The site, which was acquired over 75 years ago, has recently been refurbished thanks to a £36,500 grant through the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG), administered by the environmental body WREN.

The building has been brought up to standard with a new toilet block and electric lighting making the site accessible to all groups.

Chairman of the Conwy Scout Executive Brian Cossey said: “Without this major grant from WREN and other bodies, this work would not have happened and there was a real chance the site would have had to close.

“Now we have a new toilet block the site is open to all young people to use, not only Scouts but all youth organisations.

“In Scouting we are very happy to welcome boys and girls to our association so the site had to have more facilities.

“The electric lighting has also helped make the buildings more attractive as a centre for camping and hiking. Along with a new log burning stove it can be used in comfort all year round,” he added.

“We are very proud of our site. The refurbishment would not have happened without the unstinting persistence of our fundraiser Brian Gregson.”
